Balance Osteopathy – supporting your journey to health
For more than 3,500 years, the labyrinth has symbolised the path of life. Unlike a maze with its
dead ends, wrong turns, and false starts, a labyrinth is a unique journey with a single
destination.
The path to good health, like mazes, often experience obstacles, which Balance Osteopathy
seeks to redress. Balance Osteopathy provides a holistic approach to health care supporting the
body’s ability to restore health on each individual journey.
Osteopaths believe that the body is naturally self-healing & self-correcting, given the right environment. Let’s start by breaking this down:
We often take the body’s innate healing capacity for granted.
If we think about what happens when we sprain a joint. It swells up and is acutely painful, protecting the body from over using it, which changes how we use the muscles/joint around the injury. The body alters the blood supply and nerve supply to the injury and the healing slowly progresses and normal function is resumed. So the body has naturally healed itself well.
But what happens when the body can’t complete its journey back to full health? We often find we get stuck in recurrent patterns of dysfunction and pain. It is the job of an osteopath to understand what has gone wrong and why, and to use their hands to support the body’s natural self-healing and to overcome its dysfunction. If balance is achieved in babies and children then this encourages optimal health for a lifetime.

The first consultation can last up to 45 minutes. The osteopath will primarily take a detailed case history, including past history as well as what brought you to that point. By taking into account individual factors, this allows for a holistic and comprehensive view of your health. The osteopath will then carry out an examination of the body and carry on with treatment if appropriate.
Treatment is designed to correct each individual’s strain patterns and mechanical problems in order to stimulate their own natural healing processes. Treatment may involve gentle articulation movements, soft tissue manipulation and/or gentle cranial osteopathic techniques. All techniques are chosen for each patients individual needs, allowing for the most effective treatment for that individual.
This depends on the individual problem, some people will improve in a few sessions other more complicated problems can take longer. Some people with chronic issues, work related problems or people where fitness is key to their life or profession prefer a maintenance treatment every few months to keep the body in optimum balance. This will be discussed with you. In accordance to your medical history and what you want from treatment.
Most treatments will involve looking at the body as a whole. It is best to wear underwear or sports wear which you are comfortable in so you can relax whilst I examine your body. If you are not comfortable undressing, please let me know and we can discuss what clothing would be best to wear for your treatment.
